Bitter Rivals: The Jake Paul-Tyron Woodley Feud

In a matter of hours, YouTube personality Jake Paul will lock horns with Tyron Woodley once again inside the squared circle. The pair have unfinished business after colliding once in August, a clash that ended with Paul’s victory. Initially, Paul was supposed to face Tommy Fury, but the British boxed pulled out of the fight due to a broken rib. At the weigh-ins, Paul hit the scales at 191.4 pounds, while Woodley came in at 189.6 pounds.

After turning to professional boxing in January 2020, Paul scored four victories, including three knockouts. The list of Paul’s victims includes Ali Loui Al-Fakhri, a.k.a. AnEsonGib, former NBA player Nate Robinson, former One Championship welterweight kingpin, and UFC alum Ben Askren, and Woodley. The brother of Logan Paul showed a discrete boxing technique and a certain amount of killer instinct in his clashes, stopping all his opponents inside two rounds, safe for the Woodley clash that went the distance.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship 170-pound titleholder Woodley (0-1) is currently looking for his first victory in boxing. “The Chosen One” switched to the noble art after going on a four-bout skid in the mixed martial arts under the UFC banner. His latest victory dates back to September 2018, when he submitted Darren Till and defended his welterweight championship in the main event of UFC 228. After that occasion, Woodley first lost his title to Kamaru Usman, then dropped defeats to Gilbert Burns, Colby Covington, and Vincente Luque, fighting out of his UFC contract after the Luque fight.

The rivalry between Paul and Woodley started after the pair exchanged some heated words during a backstage confrontation before Paul’s bout with Askren in April. On that occasion, Woodley was there to cheer for his teammate at Roufusport, Askren. The situation escalated after Woodley made fun of Paul’s fighting experience and one of Paul’s cornermen, J’Leon Love, got involved. Woodley’s psychological warfare attempt failed as Paul stopped Askren with punches at the 1:59 mark of Round 1.

After talking some trash to each other on many occasions, the Paul-Woodley clash was scheduled for Aug. 29. Many combat sports fans were intrigued by the matchup as it was the first time Paul faced someone with knockout power like Woodley. During their clash, Paul proved that he could stand his ground while Woodley struggled to get out of the first gear and looked like a pale shadow of his former self. In Round 4, Woodley summoned some of his power and almost knocked down Paul, who was arguably saved by the ropes that time. “The Chosen One” failed to capitalize on the situation in the remaining rounds.

Ultimately, Paul racked up a split decision victory with 77-75, 75-77, and 78-74 nods from the judges. Woodley didn’t look happy with the result, and he demanded a rematch in the post-fight interview. While Paul initially looked to accept the offer, the YouTuber did ask Woodley to get an ‘I love Jake Paul’ tattoo if he wanted to meet him again on the ring. The former UFC champion accepted the challenge, but he did it his way as he got the tattoo on his middle finger.

Fans shouldn’t waste any chance of watching Paul wearing the boxing gloves. According to the YouTuber, combat sports are already impacting his health as he is dealing with memory loss and slurred speech at the age of 24. In many interviews, Paul attributed his condition to some early CTE symptoms.

Paul vs. Woodley 2 will air on Showtime pay-per-view at starting 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. The card also sees Amanda Serrano taking on Miriam Gutierrez, former NBA star Deron Williams vs. NFL running back Frank Gore, Liam Paro vs. Yomar Alamo, Anthony Taylor vs. Chris Avila, J’Leon Love vs. Marcus Oliveira, and Jeovanny Estela vs. Chris Rollins.
