Conor McGregor Compares Peña-Nunes To Saga With Nate Diaz

MMA Superstar Conor McGregor is blown away by the parallels between his rivalry with Nate Diaz and the rivalry between Juliana Peña and Amanda Nunes

When the dust was settled at UFC 277, Amanda Nunes was re-crowned the bantamweight champion of the UFC, cementing her status as the greatest female fighter of all time. It was a complete performance for the Brazilian double-champ, who dominated Peña from pillar to post.

Conor McGregor was taken aback by similarities between Nunes’ fights with Peña and his own fights against Nate Diaz, detailing the parallels on Twitter voice.

“No. 1, the highly touted, the GOAT of the sport, me and Amanda Nunes – sheer toughness, willingness to fight, but caught off guard,” the Irish superstar commented. “Took a couple of shots, gives a couple of shots, eats a couple of shots, but then the tide turns, gets choked. Now the return of the rematch, confidence on the other side, tenacity, toughness, all that is still there. More focused work on Amanda Nunes’ side.”

Whether you agree with McGregor’s self proclamation of GOAT status or not, there’s no denying that he succeeds in painting a picture of parallels. The point is driven home even further by the fact that Peña borrowed a line from Nate Diaz after choking out Amanda Nunes back at UFC 269.

“At the end of the original bout, ‘I’m not surprised motherf*ckers.’ And then again, ‘I’m not surprised motherf*ckers.’ Julianna said it.” McGregor noted.

Of course, we know how the story ends. “And then, the fight goes the exact same way in the second fight. Dropped multiple times, just better prepared, cracks the shots, gets the drop multiple times. But then the toughness is still there, [Peña] still in Amanda’s face, [Diaz] still in my face.”

McGregor closed out his comparison by stating “Some fights, they’re iconic mixed martial arts bouts that we’re all lucky to witness,” praising the Nunes-Peña saga as a worthy reflection to his two fights with Diaz.

Julianna Peña and Amanda Nunes are now 1-1, same as Conor and Nate. It’s unclear whether these rivalries will get resolved in a trilogy bout, though fight fans around the world would love to see it. The Lioness and the Notorious both found unexpected rivals in Peña and Diaz, giving MMA two of the best conflicts in UFC history.
