"How is it that he never lost but he is still a loser," - Conor McGregor describing Khabib Nurmagomedov in a colorful Tweet showing his admiration for former rival Jose Aldo.
The bad blood between Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor dissipated years ago, but the animosity between the Irish superstar and Khabib Nurmagoedov remains. Perhaps ironically, Jose Aldo often gets thrown into the mix when Conor and Khabib are feuding.
This isn't the first time McGregor has praised Aldo while taking shots at Nurmagomedov. Last year during a press conference in Russia, Khabib criticized Aldo after his win against Pedro Munhoz.
"He got beat up when he fought … Petr [Yan], right?” Nurmagomedov said. “A guy wins one fight and everyone starts talking. When Conor [McGregor] fought [Donald] ‘Cowboy’[Cerrone], he looked like a lion. When he fights stronger opponents, he looks like a scared chicken. Fighting top fighters shows your worth," replied Nurmagomedov when asked about what he thought of Aldo's bantamweight success.
McGregor took to defending Aldo in a series of tweets that have since been deleted, stating "This guy is still talking? Another press conference? You shit your pants of cerrone your whole career. You pulled 3 times from him. Your father, god rest his soul, could not believe his eyes the way I beat Cerrone. You disrespect cerrone and now aldo too? You ran away. Shut up."
Despite their formal rivalry, Jose Aldo spoke highly of Conor McGregor after his devastating leg break against Dustin Poirier back at UFC 264. "I think he can [get back to fighting at a high level]. I never doubt the champions, the mind and willpower of the champions. He has dominating before and was the lightweight and featherweight champion. It’s all up to him. If he wants to come back at a high level, he can do it,” Aldo said in the lead up to his fight with Munhoz.
Conor must have took that kind showing to heart, continuing in the deleted tweets "Another press conference? Haha for what? You are doing a whole load of nothing mate. You and cerrone where locked in to fight since way back and you never had the courage. You ran away and now all you do is talk like bitch. Aldo is 100 times the fighter you are, and ever will be."
Khabib notably turned down a fight with Jose Aldo when Max Holloway had to pull out after filling in for Tony Ferguson, apparently stating that Aldo wasn't a high enough level opponent. He went on to win the interim belt by defeating Al Iaquinta.
