"This has never happened in the history of this company."

Some backstage drama went down ahead of UFC 279, forcing the Ultimate Fighting Championship to cancel the pre-fight press conference before the much-anticipated Khamzat Chimaev-Nate Diaz bout. Shortly after the event kicked off, UFC President Dana White informed everyone that the press conference was canceled for safety reasons.

"This ain't gonna happen. I apologize, everybody. I'm in very weird waters, this has never happened in the history of this company. Trust me when I tell you this is the right decision, not to do this press conference right now. I hear you, I'm with you. For everybody's safety, this is the right decision. I apologize."

The Nevada-based promotion was marching out fighters two-by-two instead of bringing them out together as usual. Only Kevin Holland and Daniel Rodriguez managed to get up on the stage, answer some questions, and square off. After Holland went backstage, the situation appeared to be tense. While the UFC President was waiting for the next pair to come out, someone approached White and informed him that something was going o backstage. That's when White shut down the conference press.

At the moment, what went down exactly is still unknown, nor is it clear why White felt anyone was in danger. Apparently, it seems that multiple altercations broke out backstage. According to the first reports, four fighters were involved in the clashes. The fighters' names weren't disclosed, but someone took a couple of water bottles to the head. To the attending media junket, White stated that tomorrow's weigh-ins would proceed as usual.

The latest reports indicate that the first scuffle broke out between Holland and Chimaev. The American fighter shared his version of the story a few minutes after the incident happened.

"Just so everyone knows. I offered that clown a free beard trim. I don’t know anywhere in the US that would offer that service free! I am precise I promise I would not knick him. At your service just like the hotel staff bro."
