Jorge Masvidal is calling out loud former Ultimate Fighting Championship two-division titleholder Conor McGregor for a potential blockbuster fight.
Masvidal (35-16, 12-9 UFC) has been very vocal about the man he would like to face next as "Gamebred" is targeting McGregor. The "BMF" titleholder is currently looking to bounce back from a three-bout skid, and he thinks McGregor would be the perfect victim for the occasion. While talking with MMAFighting, Masvidal pointed out that McGregor has been unusually silent about a potential clash with him even though "Notorious" has called out almost every top fighter in the UFC lightweight and welterweight division. Per Masvidal, McGregor's silence implies that the Irishman is afraid to face him inside the Octagon.
No, Conor doesn’t want the fight. If he did, he’d post something. He’d say something. He’d probably just insult my mom or some relative of mine or my nation where I come from. He’ll say something like that, but he won’t say anything about a fight or a fight date. So the Conor thing, he just wants it ‘I hope it goes away,' because he really doesn’t want to fight. He doesn’t mention [me] or say anything. Obviously it’s maybe the biggest pay-per-view fight in history as far as the UFC goes. I think we’d shatter all numbers, all previous records. But for some reason, this guy doesn’t want to entertain it.
In his latest cage appearance, Masvidal dropped a unanimous decision to best-friend-turned-bitter-enemy Colby Covington in a grudge match that went down at UFC 272 in march. Prior, he lost to the current 170-pound kingpin Kamaru Usman as "The Nigerian Nightmare" first upended Masvidal on all scorecards at UFC 251 in July 2020, then rendered "Gamebred" unconscious with a powerful overhand in the second frame of their UFC 261 encounter in April 2021. Referring to McGregor, Masvidal reinforced the message by accusing the Irishman of having lost his motivation to compete.
Money doesn’t entertain him no more, make him want to get out of his bed. I think the only thing that makes him want to get out of bed is cocaine. That’s OK, every man has a free will. You do whatever you want. But don’t say you’re a fighter and don’t take cheap shots at me, especially the things that he’s been saying, talking about my legal problems and this and that. You’re a f*****g p***y. We could do it man to man in the cage and just once and for all and get paid a handsome reward while doing it. So if this individual doesn’t want to do it, [because] he knows what’s going to happen.”
McGregor's recent UFC results don't look that good either. The SBG Ireland representative's latest victory dates back to January 2020, when he smashed Donald Cerrone 40 seconds out of the gate in the UFC 246 headliner. After that, he conceded back-to-back defeats to Dustin Poirier, including a technical-knockout loss due to a nasty leg injury for the Irishman. McGregor didn't wait too long before answering Masvidal's challenge. In a Tweet that has been deleted since, "Notorious" made fun of his opponent by stating that he's friends with Masvidal's mother.
“Insult your mom? What a loser you are mate. Me and your mom get along.”
Masvidal had the last word in the heated exchange. A few hours after McGregor's tweet, Masvidal replied that his mother would be happy to see him fighting against the Irishman.
Yeah my mom loves you man. She knows you are about to be the biggest paycheck for me and a relatively easy fight
Both Masvidal and McGregor are in desperate need of a win inside the UFC. If they can reach an agreement, fans would be in for a real treat.
