Laura Sanko has been a trailblazer for women in the space of MMA commentary, on the cusp of becoming the first woman play-by-play analyst for a UFC Fight Night.

“My broadcast experience and my fight experience sort of met at the perfect apex,” Laura Sanko stated in an exclusive interview with Inside Fighting’s Jesse Rowe. “The women are still early enough in this sport that there are not, you know, hundreds and hundreds of them that would be able to fill a role like this and have the TV chops to do it.”

Laura Sanko is well on her way to fulfilling her dream of being a color commentator for the UFC, clearing a path for girls and women to enter this previously male-dominated space. Fans might not know this, but Sanko is an undefeated mixed martial artist, being 1-0 in her professional career. “I didn’t come into this role because I had a broadcasting background,” she states in the interview. “I had a fight background.”

Sanko has been doing color commentary for the popular Dana White’s Contenders Series, with her goal of calling a UFC Fight Night on the horizon. “That’s definitely the goal,” she responded when asked about graduating to a Fight Night. “I want to be able to call a quote-unquote ‘real’ UFC fight. That is the goal and I think we’re close.”

It will be a landmark moment in UFC history. The promotion has come a long way from the days when president Dana White said there would never be female fighters under the UFC banner. Now, with Sanko showcasing that women belong in the booth as well as the Octagon, there’s one more glass ceiling to be broken.

“We all want to leave our mark on the world,” Sanko responded when asked what this accomplishment will mean to her. “We all want to leave some sort of legacy behind us. For me…this is my way of being able to leave my little fingerprint on this sport forever. And it means the world to me to be able to do that because records can be broken, but there’s only one first.”

Congratulations to Laura Sanko! Who’s pumped for her first UFC Fight Night card?
