Logan Paul Challenges Paddy Pimblett: “Fans Would Eat that S**t Up”

Logan Paul seems pretty serious about his intention to test himself in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and has eyed his potential opponent, Paddy Pimblett.

27-year-old Paul is constantly making the headlines nowadays. After defeating Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio at WrestleMania 38 in a tag team with The Miz, the young entrepreneur is aiming to don the 4-ounce gloves and step into the Octagon for the first time. It would be a first for Paul, who does have a combat-sport background as he faced British YouTuber and rapper KSI in a boxing match. The difference between boxing and mixed martial arts is abysmal, but Paul sounded pretty confident he can make the transition in a recent interview with The MMA Hour.

“I’d like a run at it,” Paul said. “I’d like a win in some sort of a fighting, combat sport. I think I’d be good at it, too. But then again, bro, I’m like, ‘OK, do I f**king go and get my head kicked in or wrestle and have so much more fun?’ My friends, before the Wrestlemania match, they’re like, ‘Hey, good luck!’ and I’m like, ‘Enjoy the show!’ Before a boxing match, it’s like, ‘I love you, brother. You can do anything you want.’ They’re praying for me backstage, my heart’s pounding. It’s f**king a headache! It’s crazy, the difference between a boxing event and a wrestling event, so I don’t know, bro. But I found out who I’d like to fight if I did a UFC match: Paddy ‘The Baddy.’”

Former Cage Warriors featherweight champion Pimblett is enjoying a good moment of popularity and results. Pimblett (18-3, 2-0 UFC) made his UFC debut by stopping Luigi Vendramini with punches in the opening stanza of their lightweight affair at UFC Fight Night 191. Subsequently, “The Baddy” forced Rodrigo Vargas to tap due to a deep rear-naked choke attempt at the 3:49 mark of Round 1 at the recent UFC London event. The Liverpudlian fighter has rattled off four consecutive wins, including a couple scored before signing with the UFC.

“They’re saying he’s possibly the next Conor McGregor, right?” Paul added. “He’s super charismatic, he’s entertaining as hell, he’s on the come up, he’s young like me, he’s got a real loudmouth. I just like the way he can perform. I think also, in the off-season, he can come up like 25 pounds. The kid blows up in the off-season, I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s like someone put a pump in him. So he can get up to 185 and I can get down to 185 and possibly do a UFC match.”

Weight might be the most significant issue preventing this fight from happening. Paul walked around the 200-pound mark before he clashed with KSI. On that occasion, he might even have cut a few pounds before hitting the scales. At the moment, Pimblett is a 155-pounder who doesn’t seem to be willing to move up a division anytime soon. “The Baddy” might take some time off his diet off-camp, but, even so, he is very far from thinking about fighting in a 205- or 185-pound contest. That includes any kind of catchweight the UFC might come up with to satisfy all the parties involved.

Paul’s only pro boxing fight didn’t go his way as he dropped a narrow split decision loss to KSI. Still, the match was pretty close and Paul proved that he can stand his ground in the squared circle. Things might go differently in MMA as he needs to train his grappling skills in addition to his striking. Yet he stated that he was dead serious about fighting a UFC fight sooner or later when he met Dana White while the two were guests on the same podcast.

“[White] asked me who I’d want to fight, and I didn’t have anyone in mind, and now I’m looking at it, and I’m like, ‘OK, if I were to do a UFC fight, it needs to be with someone who can sell tickets.’ Paddy can sell, we’ve seen how he can activate crowds, and he’s still relatively new, he’s young, he’s entertaining. I just think the fans would eat that s**t up.”

At the moment, the Paul-Pimblett fight seems to be still very far from becoming true. Still, fans should never say never in the combat sports business. With the right amount of money and on the right occasion, everything can happen.
