TOMMY FURY EDGES CLOSE DECISION AGAINST JAKE PAUL, CALLS FOR REMATCH
Tommy Fury handed Jake Paul his first loss in boxing via split decision after back-and-forth battle.
Tommy Fury gets to keep his older brother’s last name! It was a back-and-forth battle with a handful of dubious moments for both fighters (and the ref…), but Tommy Fury lived up to his surname by defeating Jake Paul via split decision, 76-73 x 2, 74-75.
Fury was able to establish his jab early – paying dividends throughout the fight. Jake Paul seemed to have trouble establishing his range for his signature overhand right early on.
The fight wasn’t without controversy – with the ref deducting points from Jake Paul and then Tommy Fury in back-to-back rounds for punches behind the head. Everyone felt like the judge was interjecting himself into the fight too much – even the commentary – but it didn’t end up mattering.
Jake Paul’s biggest moment came in the 8th round, when he knocked down Tommy Fury in a furious flurry – shades of his fight with Anderson Silva.
It was too little, too late, though – Fury was too far ahead on two judge’s scorecards.
Despite all the bad blood in the buildup for this fight – years in the making after two previous cancellations – there was nothing but respect between the two competitors. Both Jake Paul and Tommy Fury were keen on a rematch – expect to see Paul vs. Fury 2 sometime in the not-so-distant future.
