There was a lot of drama ahead of the upcoming Ultimate Fighting Championship event.

The UFC 279 headliner was supposed to see rising UFC star Khamzat Chimaev taking on MMA legend Nate Diaz in a 170-pound clash. Unfortunately, Chimaev (10-0) missed weight badly when he first stepped on the scale. "Borz" weighed 178.5 pounds, 7.5 pounds over the welterweight division's limit.

In turn, Nate Diaz had no issues in hitting the contracted weight. Diaz (20-13) is looking to bounce back on track after dropping back-to-back defeats to Leon Edwards and Jorge Masvidal. The Stockton-representative fighter professionally stepped on the scales at 171 pounds. At the moment of writing, it's unsure whether the UFC will move on with the scheduled main event. Updates will follow.

In the co-feature, former interim UFC lightweight titleholder Tony Ferguson is taking on Li Jingliang. In his attempt to score a victory after suffering defeats in his latest four Octagon appearances, "El Cucuy" is moving up a division. Ferguson recorded 171 pounds on the scale, while Jingliang weighed 170.5 pounds.

In other news, Hakeem Dawodu failed to make weight for his scheduled featherweight clash with Julian Erosa, as he came in at 149.5 pounds. Additionally, Chris Barnett became the second heavyweight fighter to miss weight in UFC history after recording 267.5 pounds on the scale.

UFC 279 will go down at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on September 10. The preliminary card will kick off on ESPN+ at 6 p.m. ET. The main card airs on ESPN PPV starting at 10 p.m. ET.
