Per Ariel Helwani, the UFC wants the final fight of Francis Ngannou’s contract to be against Jon Jones. Jones is preparing for his heavyweight debut in his return to the UFC, with speculations about fights with Curtis Blaydes, Stipe Miocic, and Francis Ngannou.

MMA fans around the globe are dying to know the answer to the question: who is Jon Jones going to fight at heavyweight?

Jon “Bones” Jones hasn’t fought since UFC 247 all the way back in February, 2020, when he defeated Dominick Reyes via unanimous decision. The consensus greatest fighter of all time has been teasing a return to the UFC at heavyweight, something that fans have been talking about since early in his career.

However, there have been a lot of hiccups along the way. All three of Jon Jones, Francis Ngannou, and Stipe Miocic have expressed frustrations with the UFC’s matchmaking and purses, leading to a bit of stagnation. Stipe Miocic hasn’t fought since losing his belt to Ngannou back at UFC 260 last year, while Francis is recovering from knee surgery after defending his belt against Ciryl Gane.

Despite their disputes with the UFC brass, both Francis Ngannou and Stipe Miocic have expressed a desire to fight Jon Jones. While Ngannou wants to put on the biggest fight possible, Miocic said the only fights he’s interested in are a rematch with Ngannou or a showdown with Jones.

Rumors were circulating that the UFC was planning to add Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic to the UFC 282 card in December, but no confirmation has been announced. However, a new rumor has emerged that contradicts the Miocic-Jones matchup.

During an appearance on The Ringer Podcast, MMA journalist Ariel Helwani stated that he had insider knowledge regarding the UFC’s desires for Jon Jones’ heavyweight debut. According to Helwani, the UFC wants Jones to wait until Ngannou is recovered from his knee surgery, wanting the biggest fight possible for Ngannou’s final contracted fight.

Ngannou has expressed his desire to leave the organization and go into boxing, saying he feels mistreated by the use of the “Champion clause” in his UFC contract. However, Jones was always a name that interested the champ, so if Jon is willing to wait, that could be the fight to make.

Helwani also stated that if Jones didn’t want to wait until Ngannou recovered, a fight with Stipe was the backup plan.

Only time will tell who Jon Jones will be facing in his return to the UFC octagon. The matchups with Miocic and Ngannou are both fascinating fights, and a win over either competitor will only further cement Jones’ status as the greatest fighter to ever grace the planet.
