Dillon Danis may be gunning for a UFC contract – but BJJ superstar Gordon Ryan doesn’t think his former foe has what it takes to compete in the world’s premiere MMA promotion.

Ryan spoke exclusively with Inside Fighting’s Andrew Capucetti, sharing his thoughts on Danis entering the UFC – and whether or not he’d ever want to enter the Octagon himself.

Gordon Ryan Says Dillon Danis Is a Draw, But a Bad Fighter

“I think he’d be a draw in the UFC,” Ryan stated when asked about Danis’ UFC aspirations. “[But] he doesn’t train anymore … he wasn’t very good at jiu-jitsu … he has no striking. He’s not a good MMA fighter.”

Ryan defeated Danis at the 2017 ADCC World Championships by unanimous decision – so the man has some personal insights into the controversial fighter’s abilities. It’s safe to say that he’s not very confident Danis would perform well under the UFC banner – but that wouldn’t stop him from getting some buzz.

“[Danis would] garnish a lot of attention,” Ryan stated. “But he’s not going to, like, beat anybody good in the UFC … he’s not a top 10 or top 15 UFC fighter, no.”

Danis has been actively campaigning for a UFC contract on Twitter – but there haven’t been any signals that Dana White has any interest.

Gordon Ryan Isn’t Planning on Joining UFC

“John [Danaher] always tells me to kind of stick with grappling, and John’s never been wrong about anything,” Ryan responded when asked if he’d ever take the dive into the world of MMA. “Right now I’m just focused on defending my super fight title for ADCC and then coming down from there.”

There’s no denying that Gordon Ryan is the biggest name in BJJ – something he feels he needs to maintain for the health of the sport.

“Grappling needs another star to keep on the trajectory of moving into a mainstream sport,” Ryan continued. “I don’t want to leave now and just like, have it back in high school gymnasiums.”
