Jalin Turner says he beat Mateusz Gamrot, ‘I did more damage!!!’

In the MMA judging criteria, damage trumps all – and that’s exactly why Jalin Turner thinks he beat Mateusz Gamrot. The extremely talented (and extremely tall) lightweight told Inside Fighting’s Andrew Capucetti why he thought he did enough to win the fight, despite being grateful for the learning experience.

“I think I won that fight,” Turner stated. “It’s a little controversial, but, you know, I could see how the judges scored it in his favor … he did his ground control at the end of the round, but as far as damage, you know, outside scoring criteria, I believe I won.”

Turner fought Gamrot at UFC 285 last month in a split decision, losing on two scorecards, 29-28. One judge had the fight 29-28 in favor of Turner.

Considering how close the fight was, a rematch could be on the tables – something Turner is open to. Both fighters are in the top 10 at lightweight – with Gamrot being 7th and Turner being 10th. Neither fighter prepared for each other heading into the bout – Gamrot was a late replacement for “Tarantula’s” original opponent – Dan Hooker.

That’s a fight Turner is still keen on.

“We could do Dan [Hooker] again,” Turner responded when asked about who he wants next. Hooker pulled out of their fight due to breaking his hand, but Turner’s timeline lines up nicely with Hooker’s recovery. “July, International Fight Week,” Turner said when asked when he wanted to fight next.

“I broke my hand a few times,” Turner explained. “Eight to ten weeks. He broke his hand mid-April, so he should be about ready. Give him another eight weeks for the camp, that’s perfect timing to fight in July.”
