Cody Brundage Defends Ian Garry Against “Douche” Sean Strickland – 5 Minutes for Fighting (video)
“Sean Strickland’s a really, really, really talented, awesome fighter. And I think he’s a total douche … you can be both those things!” – Cody Brundage
It may seem like everyone joined Sean Strickland on ragging Ian Garry for his relationship with his wife Layla Machado-Garry – but UFC middleweight Cody Brundage thinks Strickland (and everyone else) has crossed a line.
On the latest episode of 5 Minutes for Fighting, Brundage spoke with Inside Fighting’s Jesse Rowe about his recent head slam KO at UFC Austin, the beef between Sean Strickland and Ian Garry, and Leon Edwards’ double-champ aspirations.
Cody Brundage Calls Sean Strickland a Douche for Talking About Ian Garry’s Wife
Sean Strickland is not the kind of guy to pull punches – so when he chimed in on Ian Garry’s relationship with his wife, it was exactly the kind of roasting you’d expect.
Strickland ragged on the surging Irish welterweight, stating that Garry needs to get out of his marriage ASAP because he’s being taken advantage of.
This has placed Strickland squarely on Garry’s hit list – with the undefeated prospect already talking about going up to middleweight to defend his honor.
Many fans think moving up would be a mistake for Garry – but Cody Brundage thinks he’d do well.
“If [Garry] moves up to [185] I think he’ll do well … he’s big for the weight class. Sean Strickland might be a tough fight for him,” Brundage responded when asked about the potential matchup. “What choice does he have? The guy’s insulting his wife.”
Back in the day, the unwritten rules of professional fighting included not talking about family or religion. It’s a line that’s been crossed plenty of times in recent years, but many fighters still adhere to the code.
“To me, the whole thing is super corny, man,” Brundage continued. “When people’s families get brought into it and you’re doing things like that, it’s just not really my style. I find it to be very icky.”
Don’t get him wrong – Brundage has a ton of respect for Strickland as a fighter. He just doesn’t think being good at fighting makes you a relationship guru.
“I think being good at fighting’s awesome … [but] it’s such a thing that does not translate to the real world at all, right? Don’t be giving people advice on how to live their life, how to have good relationships, how to treat people. I don’t know, that’s just my two cents.”
All that said, Brundage isn’t surprised that Strickland’s at the top of his division.
“I think he’s a good champ. He’s very talented, he’s a great fighter. He’ll fight anyone. He’s not like, ducking matchups, he has an entertaining style. He’s funny at press conferences,” Brundage added. “There are definitely good things. I just think, like, be good at fighting. Do your fighting thing. But don’t do all of the other sh*t.”
What do you guys think – do you agree with Brundage? Or was Strickland roasting Garry fair game?
