Trey Ogden Wants Mike Beltran FIRED After Bad Stoppage – 5 Minutes for Fighting (video)
Bad stoppages occur in MMA – but Trey Ogden thinks there should be consequences for the refs when they happen. Serious consequences.
Ogden spoke with Inside Fighting’s Jesse Rowe on the latest episode of 5 Minutes for Fighting, where he voiced frustrations with referee Mike Beltran after his fight with Nikolas Motta was ruled a no-contest.
Trey Ogden Wants No-Contest Against Nikolas Motta Overturned
“It’s kind of an unfortunate situation how [Mike Beltran’s] mistake can cost me half my money,” Ogden stated. “I did everything. I made weight. I was professional. I fought as hard as I could. Exciting fight, great performance. [I] essentially finished my opponent. And then I don’t get any of the rewards from that.”
The fight against Motta was tilting in Ogden’s favor – with the UFC lightweight sinking in a choke in the third round. However, things went awry when Mike Beltran called the fight without Motta tapping – resulting in what many fans believe was an egregiously unfair no-contest.
The botched call ended up costing Ogden more than just the fight – it also cost him half his purse.
“The state calls it a no-contest, but they know how the pay structure of the sport works,” Ogden continued. “It’s essentially erasing what I just did … the referee [made] a mistake, he [should] get penalized. That would make a lot more sense to me than [the] referee [making] a mistake and I get penalized.”
Ogden has done his best to make peace with the situation, but things haven’t been going great for Mike Beltran beyond his bad call during his fight.
“I don’t want my performance to be overshadowed by all this nonsense, even in my own mind and heart,” Ogden stated.
Trey Ogden Says Mike Beltran Needs to be FIRED Over Terrible Stoppage
Ogden’s been at the brunt of a referee’s mistakes – but thinks there need to be harsher repercussions since fighters are putting their lives on the line.
“When [refs] are morally aligned, they don’t just mess up, like make a glaring mistake like this,” Ogden stated. “And if they do, they should be punished. Harshly.”
It may sound like a harsh indictment, but it’s not a sentiment that’s foreign to fighters.
“In my opinion, [Mike Beltran] should be suspended or fined, or both, or fired,” Ogden stated. “You can’t have this at the top level.”
His gripe isn’t just with Beltran, however. It also extends to the Athletic Commission – with Odgen believing the fight should be overturned to a finish.
“This should just be a submission win,” Ogden continued. “This is what I do. I submit people. I have a lot of submissions on my record … if a TKO gets stopped a little early … it’s still a TKO.”
What do you guys think – should the fight be overturned? Do there need to be harsher penalties when MMA referees mess up? Let us know in the comments.
