Charles Oliveira Knocks Out Beneil Darish at UFC 289

The favela wins again.

Charles “Do Bronx” adds another notch to his UFC finish record – knocking out Beneil Dariush in the first round of the UFC 289 co-main event.

Oliveira now has 20 finishes in the Octagon – a record that is unlikely to be challenged anytime soon. He also moves to third all-time for UFC wins, tied with Demian Maia at 23.

Dariush came into the fight riding an 8-fight win streak, with sights set on a title fight against Islam Makhachev. However, Oliveira’s striking proved to be too much. Despite getting Oliveira to the ground, Dariush couldn’t get much working. When Oliveira got to his feet, he connected with a partially blocked head kick that was the beginning of the end for Dariush.

Oliveira immediately called for a rematch against Islam Makhachev – the man who broke Oliveira’s 11-fight win streak back at UFC 280 last October. The UFC is slated to return to Abu Dhabi in October for UFC 294, with speculation amongst fans that the rematch between Oliveira and Makhachev could happen then.

Islam Makhachev Responds to Charles Oliveira’s Win at UFC 289

Makhachev congratulated Oliveira on his impressive victory – but reminded him about the levels to the game.

Makhachev choked out Oliveira in the second round of their main event bout at UFC 280, but Oliveira remained the top contender in the division. With Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje set to fight for the BMF belt at UFC 291, Oliveira cemented his place as the top contender at 155.

During the UFC 289 post-fight press conference, Dana White seemed keen on making the rematch. “I’m excited to see [Oliveira and Makhachev] fight again,” White stated.
