UFC Vegas 79 Results: Mateusz Gamrot vs. Rafael Fiziev ends with a disappointing injury

Mateusz Gamrot vs. Rafael Fiziev was shaping up to be an instant classic between two of the most talented lightweights on the planet – until it wasn’t. Mateusz Gamrot beat Rafael Fiziev via TKO in the second round at UFC Vegas 79, but it wasn’t the ending anyone was hoping for – not even Gamrot.

The first round had a little bit of everything – explosive combinations, superb takedown defense, otherworldly balance, and skill. It felt like a teaser for what was shaping up to be an excellent fight. However, after Fiziev threw a kick in the second round, he collapsed backward, forcing Herb Dean to call the fight. Replay revealed that he injured his knee, putting an end to the spectacle before it really got a chance to begin.

It’s as bitter of an ending as Fiziev could have expected. He looked great in the first round – displaying excellent takedown defense and touching Gamrot up with powerful strikes. It wasn’t a dominant round, but he was up on the scorecards going into the second. After losing to Justin Gaethje at UFC 286 in his last bout, Fiziev came out strong – looking better than ever.

It wasn’t the way Gamrot wanted to win – but he now finds himself with back-to-back victories and 6-1 in his last 7 fights. He came into UFC Vegas 79 as the 7th-ranked lightweight, challenging Fiziev for the 6th spot. They’ll likely trade places, meaning Gamrot may only be another win away from a title shot.

It was a truly disappointing ending, to be sure – but the fight was so good while it lasted that many fans would happily sign up to see them run it back once Fiziev is healthy.
