UFC Welterweight Belal Muhammad wants his next fight to be against surging prospect Khamzat Chimaev, wearing a shirt with an image of him facing off with the Swedish-Chechen star at the UFC 276 press conference.

Belal “Remember the Name” Muhammad has established himself as one of the premier contenders in the UFC’s welterweight division, currently riding a 6-fight win streak. Many believe that he’s next in line for a title shot against the winner of Kamaru Usman vs. Leon Edwards 2 at UFC 278 this August. Despite this, Muhammad doesn’t seem interested in waiting around, calling for a fight against rising star Khamzat Chimaev.

When asked what fight he wanted next, Belal responded “I got it on my shirt. This is the one I want, this is the one that makes sense. UFC, you don’t got to put it on no posters, it’s already all set for you.”

Khamzat “Borz” Chimaev most recently defeated Gilbert Burns via unanimous decision at UFC 273 back in April of this year. The fight was an instant classic and the toughest test for the 28-year-old star, who remained undefeated despite skipping the line at welterweight. Before facing Burns, who was ranked 2nd in the division at the time, Chimaev’s only other ranked opponent was Jingliang Li, who was ranked 11th at the time that they fought.

“It’s the only one [fight] that makes sense,” Muhammad continued. “We’re both the two top welterweights that haven’t fought Usman yet. We’re both on dominant runs right now…both of us are in the top five…I’m willing to fight him, he’s willing to fight me. What’s the hold up?”

Chimaev and Muhammad seemed to come to an agreement on social media that they would face each other. Earlier this month, Chimaev stated on Twitter that he would fight Belal on the condition that he didn’t bring the Palestinian flag with him into batlle.

Muhammad responded by saying he’s comply, and Chimaev set a target: UFC 281 in October from Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

Following the UFC 276 press conference, Chimaev posted a picture of Muhammad sporting the tshirt with the fight promo.

It would seem that the two are on a crash course, destined to confront one another inside of the Octagon. Now it all depends on whether or not the UFC matchmakers agree; other fights being floated for Chimaev’s next opponent include a rematch with Gilbert Burns and a showdown with fellow undefeated welterweight prospect Shakvat Rakmanov.

Credit is due for Belal Muhammad, being one of the few fighters who actively campaigned for a showdown against Khamzat Chimaev. His confidence is justifiably sky high, giving his scenario for how he believed the fight would play out.

“I [will] prove I’m the best. However it is, I’m going out there looking for a win…I can KO anybody.”

Is this the right fight for the UFC to make, or would you rather see Belal Muhammad and Khamzat Chimaev face different opponents? If this fight is made, how do you see it playing out?
