It was a point of pride for the newly minted UFC welterweight champion to be the first British MMA fighter to win a belt out of the UK. Michael Bisping was the first English champion, having won the middleweight title off Luke Rockhold at UFC 199. However, as Leon “Rocky” Edwards pointed out in the UFC 278 post-fight press conference, Bisping won his title training out of the United States.
“This has never been done before, to have a guy from Birmingham in the UK, did it from the UK,” Edwards stated during the conference. “[Bisping] did it from living in America, so it was hard for people like me to relate, to say, ‘Look, we can do it too, as well.’”
Rocky’s team out of Renegade Jiu-Jitsu were a huge part of Edwards’ success, with head coach Dave Lovell doing everything he could to get his fighter going in those late rounds.
And for any of the doubters saying it was a fluke, insane footage of Leon’s coaches from Renegade Jiu-Jitsu has surfaced of them speaking specifically about the head kick technique that won their fighter the 170 lbs strap.
It was a landmark moment for Team Renegade, who have their first UFC champion. The reactions after Edwards landed that fateful head kick speak for themselves.
